Hi,
I finally booked our trip. We are going from George Lake access on the 24th of June for a (hopefully) gentle week. For our first outing to Killarney I thought we would keep it shorter, so tell me what you think:

Let me try that again without hitting enter too soon...
Night 1 - H2
Night 2 - H4
Night 3 - H8
Night 4 - H17
Night 5 - H8
Night 6 - H6
Night 7 - H6
Night 8 - H2
We're new at the backpacking thing so I am keeping the sites close together for this trip. This should leave time to explore, so anything in this area I should look for? Anybody have a favorite sight in this area? |

Wow, do I ever wish you could edit your posts here.
July, not June.
I'm not retarded, honest. |

H2 is a hilly site and has one pond above the site as well as the lake. Not sure if it is still inhabited, but there is a beaver lodge near the site at the end of the lake. In July, you may be able to see/hear beaver kits (or whatever the babies are called). The ridges around there are low and you could explore them - you can see out the Georgian Bay.
In the ridge by H4 there was a plane crash - I believe most of the debris has been cleaned up but you could go exploring and see what you can find.
H6 is a nice open site. There is good swimming and it's a nice place to relax. If you don't do the side trips on your way along the trail, it's a good spot to do a dayhike to Baie Fine from (just go down the portage to get to the Baie) and to explore the ridges above H7, which are lovely.
Above H7 (Topaz Lake) you can also try to find the location that Arthur Lismer (Group of Seven) painted 'Bright Lands' a la forum member jcw. http://www.groupofseven.ca/Adventures/Revolutionary-Modern-Art/Waddington-Adventure.aspx
I've eaten lunch at H8 and seems to be a nice spot. This could be another place to explore around H7 from (though you seem to have more time at H6).
Some quick thoughts, anyways. |

There are many good things with your plan, and one not so good. First the bad news: Site H8 is not very good. It's close to cottages and the view is trees. But, you're still outside in a beautiful park!
Now the good: You will undoubtedly have fun taking it easy and there are lots of things to check out. In addition to the possibilities Jarn mentioned around H2, H4, H6 and H7:
I would strongly recommend hiking up to the ridge view on the sidetrail to H7, even though you're not camping there. Just drop your packs off the main trail. You will find a great view of Baie Fine.
On your second day you have a short hike H2 to H4, which makes the sidetrip up Gulch Hill very doable. I know Jarn mentioned this, but I want to give you some motivation: It is a FANTASTIC view in all directions. Just head NE from H4 and you will eventually find the trail up the hill.
Take a walk down as many of the portages as possible. Never know what you'll see. My wife were having a quiet lunch near an unnamed lake when four wild turkeys walked right up to us.
Other than that, you will have time to relax along the trail and hope that the wildlife comes to you. The good kind of wildlife like birds and small or benign mammals. |
