Hi
I'm new to the forum and am hoping to get some info on off trail hiking. Specifically - Is there anyone who has tried a route from Howry lake to Moose lake and then down Moose pass to Three Narrows lake? We're doing a two week canoeing/hiking trip in August 2010 (starting at Bell lake access) and are looking to loop back to Three Narrows without having to go back further north or out to the park's west end. Any information would be appreciated, especially the conditions down the length of Moose pass.

Thanks.

We haven't hiked that route but have hiked off trail in much of the park. In general it seems that with planning and careful map reading you can go almost everywhere. The open rock helps a lot. In the past we have used the park map and google earth satellite views to plan a route. The main impediments to hiking are cliffs. We look at the satellite view to find the mostly open areas, then use the park map to look for possible cliffs. If you do come to an unexpected cliff, you can almost always find a small valley (reentrant) to go through.

Thanks for the reply Jim.
I looked at Google Earth and was concerned with the download. Did you experience any computer problems while downloading or after the download?

If you prefer not to use Google Earth, there is another (simpler) way to do it.
Go to http://maps.google.ca/
enter 46.13,-81.44 in the box and enter
Zoom in the green arrow and you should recognize where you are.

Thanks Jim.
I tried google maps. The co-ordinates you provided me gave me the same map I've viewed on some other sites but the resolution with the co-ordinate map was better (to a 200m scale vs. 500m scale). These maps have two sections - one that is more colorful but of lower resolution and the other a monotone section with very good resolution (sharp, clear image and 100m scale). It looks like the map is a composite of two sets of sat images. Unfortunately the Howry lake/Moose pass region is in the area of lower resolution.

Hi H boyd

Thanks for your response. Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I was away for awhile. You mentioned the creek through moose pass is quite open - it does look that way from the images on google earth and the topo/terrain maps. My original intent was to find a route from nellie to 3 narrows and then I thought that access from howry might be a better idea. Having looked at the google earth images, I'm once again considering going from nellie thro the creek at the far east end of that lake to another smaller unnamed lake. Then from there down to 3 narrows following the unnamed creek that runs into the lacloche silouette trail further south (this creek is the one just west of moose creek). This route is shorter but the pass looks somewhat narrower with steeper sides. We'll be using an inflatable canoe that we took on a trip to the barron river in algonquin last year. I can pack the canoe down so if this other pass is somewhat rougher than moose pass we should be able to manage. What do you think?

there is a waterfall on that creek just west of moose pass...if youre hiking the infatable you can get through..but never float it. I would take the little creek even one more west past a couple of ponds ..less extreme terrain except coming off Nellie. One should then be able to access the trail and continue past the where the trail goes up its steepest pitch to hit three narrows. Bushwhacking in Killarney can always be done..it just takes a map, compass and time.
